Best time of day to hit the Wildwood beach - early morning or late afternoon?

We're coming with 3 kids and want to avoid the worst of the crowds. Is the beach more bearable first thing in the morning or does it clear out around 5pm?

Late afternoon around 4-6pm is also great. Crowds thin out, temps drop a bit, and the water is warmest from the sun all day. The 11am-2pm window is when it gets brutal.

Early morning is golden - 7-9am the beach is almost empty and the water is calm. Lifeguards don't start until 10am so swim at your own risk, but it's peaceful. We do breakfast on the beach every year.
